![]() ![]() A whole new set of characters are introduced, necessitating a bit of a reset and a slower pace again as they’re built up so we can get to know them.Ĭhief among the new characters is Rose Walker (Kyo Ra), a young woman in an odd situation. Nonetheless, it could be a bit jarring for non-comic readers that, just over halfway through the season, the show is effectively starting again from scratch. That story is the second one in the original comics run, The Doll’s House I’ll not set out here what it’s about, and besides it’s clear that a number of changes will have to be made to the story for it to work in the framework of this TV show, so my impression of it from the comics might be plain wrong anyway. And it is a woman.”Īfter last ep’s beautifully contemplative interlude, with ep7 of The Sandman it’s clear we’re onto a new story. ![]() There is a dream vortex, the first for a long time. ![]() ![]() “I’m not sure, but isn’t it female?” asks that same cleaner about one of the objects. The book takes the form of a series of statements – some missing, some with material redacted – made by the crew to a bureaucratic committee investigating the effects of the strange objects: not what they might be or reveal, but how they might “precipitate reduction or enhancement of performance, task-related understanding and the acquisition of new knowledge and skills”. The Employees is not only a disconcertingly quotidian space opera it’s also an audacious satire of corporate language and the late-capitalist workplace, and a winningly abstracted investigation into what it means to be human. “It’s not hard to clean them,” says a crew member of the strange objects found on the faraway planet New Discovery, now housed in the Six-Thousand Ship orbiting above. ![]() Danish author Olga Ravn’s brilliantly unusual novel The Employees, which has been shortlisted for the International Booker prize, is an SF epic in miniature, but it takes a prosaic approach to our dreams of extraterrestrial transcendence. F rom the mysterious monoliths in 2001: A Space Odyssey to the impossible spaceship in Arrival, one of science fiction’s favourite tropes is the alien artefact that defies human comprehension. ![]() ![]() ![]() There’s so much humour in these characters, and I love the wit and cheekiness of them. Unlike the other three books, the majority of the action in this book is far more serious than comedic (though that isn’t entirely true). This was also probably the most intense and action oriented of the four novels, and with good reason when you hit the ending. I loved how Carriger wrapped up the mystery of her character in particular, and I’m always happy to see when there’s more to a grumpy character. While it didn’t feature much of my favourite character (Sidheag), the focus on Agatha, who has been quite the allure this whole series, was fantastic. Once more, I think of all four books and this one made me laugh the hardest at times. That’s how I felt about Sophronia and her friends. Gail Carriger is one of my favourite authors and she always writes these unforgettable, crazy bunch of characters who get under your skin and stay a part of you. It pains me to see that this series is over. ![]() Huge thank you to Hachette Book Group Canada and Netgalley for this ARC! And that's fine, because in another bizarre twist, it turns out that the pair are a perfect sexual match, and that's where the novel gets quite steamy, well, so long as the reader is okay with reading about alien-human sexual encounters. Struggling to find help on Not-Hoth, George encounters Vektal, a large, blue alien, who immediately falls in love with her and claims her as her mate. Along the way, the ship crashes into an ice planet, known (of all the tricky, deceptive things,) as Not-Hoth. It tells the story of Georgie, a young woman who is abducted by aliens, who are a part of a bizarre intergalactic trafficking scheme, that involves human women aged in their twenties. It turns out that Ice Planet Barbarians is a little of all three. Was this science fiction? A romance? A blend of the two?
